The Baltimore Orioles believe that they found their catcher of the future. With the 5th pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, the Orioles selected catcher Matt Wieters.

He is a switch-hitting catcher from the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Wieters was named a first-team All-American by Rivals.com in 2007. In addition, he was named first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference, as well.

“We are very pleased, very happy, and glad it’s over, we took the player we wanted,” said Joe Jordan, the Orioles’ director of scouting.

There was a chance that the Orioles would not draft Wieters. But they decided to draft him, even though that super agent Scott Boras represents him.

Boras and Orioles owner Peter Angelos reportedly have a rocky relationship.

“Obviously, we got past that, we feel like, at the end of the day, he will be out there playing for us,” said Jordan. “There will be some, but we would not have taken him if we did not think he would be out this summer.”

Wieters was rated as the best catcher in the draft by Baseball America. He has also been compared to 2001 No. 1 overall draft pick, Joe Mauer, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins at that time.

With the Yellow Jackets this past season, Wieters had a .358 batting average with 10 home runs and 59 RBIs.
