Tony Gwynn Jr. has left the Philadelphia Phillies to be with his family. That is understandable with his current situation.
Earlier today, his father and the legendary San Diego Padres outfielder Tony Gwynn Sr. passed away. He died of cancer at the age of 54 years old. At least that is what is being reported by the news media.
It is not clear how long the Phillies will be without Gwynn. But the Phillies are expected to give him as much time as he needs to be with his family before returning to the team.

“The Phillies have recalled OF Aaron Altherr and placed Tony Gwynn Jr. on the bereavement list,” Phillies reporter Matt Gelb said in a tweet.
The backup outfielder has a .268 batting average with two doubles and three RBIs in 52 games. He last appeared in a game on June 13th against the Chicago Cubs.
In that game, he went 0-for-3.
In a story that was published on Comcast SportsNet, Gwynn Jr. talked about his father’s health in a story that was published on Father’s Day. It was a grave assessment at best.

“When I left for spring training, he was in a good spot, and now, he’s not in that same spot, so from that standpoint, I guess it has worsened,” Gwynn Jr. said in the story. “But in the big scheme of things, which is getting healthy so he can do the things he wants to do, I see light at the end of the tunnel. I can’t say that he does, but then again, he’s the one going through this, and it’s tough on him.”
