Former NFL wide receiver Reche Caldwell was shot and killed on Saturday night in Tampa, Florida. He was 41.
Caldwell was reportedly ambushed in the shooting that happened near his residence. The incident happened around 11 pm local time.
The authorities believe that Caldwell was murdered in a targeted attack.
“Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim of a gunshot wound in the front yard of a residence. Officers immediately began providing life-saving measures,” the police said in a statement. “Tampa Fire Rescue arrived and transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
“This does not appear to be a random act. However, it is very early in the investigation and detectives are working to develop leads in the case. Updates will be provided as they become available.”
TMZ — who broke the news, like they have done with other celebrity deaths — is reporting that Caldwell was shot and killed as he and his wife were going to go out on a date. He went inside the residence to get a jacket and was killed as he exited.
His girlfriend told TMZ that he was ambushed. She said that “a couple of guys” jumped out of bushes and tried to rob him.
Caldwell was shot in the chest and the leg. He later succumbed to his injuries on his way to the hospital.
“He was a good person who smiled all of the time,” Deborah Caldwell said to TMZ. “He tried to help everyone he could. He was the type of guy who would take his shirt off his back and give it to you.”
Caldwell — who was born in Tampa, Florida — played in the NFL from 2002-2007. He was a second-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers.
He played in the NFL with the Chargers, New England Patriots, and the Washington Redskins.
