The Kansas City Chiefs’ franchise goal was to sign Patrick Mahomes II to an extension. But nobody saw this extension coming.

It is a rare 10-year agreement for the MVP. Financial terms of the contract have not been released yet.

This is just the fourth deal that has been confirmed to be 10 years or longer. One player even received a “lifetime” agreement.

The last was the Atlanta Falcons, who signed then-quarterback Michael Vick to a 10-year deal in 2004. In 2002, the Philadelphia Eagles signed Donovan McNabb to a 12-year deal.

In 2001, the New England Patriots signed Drew Bledsoe to a 10-year agreement. The Green Bay Packers also signed Brett Favre to a “lifetime” deal in 2001.

The 24-year-old has spent his entire career with the Chiefs. He was their 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Since being drafted, Mahomes has been named to two Pro Bowl teams. Besides being named MVP, he is also a Super Bowl Champion, the 2018 AP Offensive Player of the Year, and a one-time All-Pro.

Mahomes II has appeared in 31 games, including 31 starts. He is 24-7 as a starter, including double-digit regular season wins in 2018 and 2019, his first two seasons as a full-time starter.
