Tommy Johnson Jr. has picked up another No. 1 qualifier this season. The MD Anderson Cancer Center pilot is the leader in the Funny Car category on Saturday at the Dodge NHRA Indy Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis in Brownsburg, Indiana.
This is Johnson Jr.’s second No. 1 qualifier in the last three Indy races after going 3.976 at 318.54 mph in the Don Schumacher Racing Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car. This is his 20th career No. 1 qualifier.
“Anytime you are in a points championship battle with these guys [Hagan and Beckman] and they have to race each other that’s good,” said Johnson. “No. 1, we get extra points and now we need to see what we can do with it [Sunday].”
