Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has been lost for the rest of the 2020 season. He suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle on Sunday against the New York Giants.

He had surgery on Sunday night. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the surgery “went well” after being performed by Cowboys Head Team Orthopedist Dan Cooper, who worked with Gene Curry, a renowned foot and ankle doctor, to repair the injury.

The signal-caller is expected to be a free agent next March. He signed a one-year franchise deal with the team worth more than $31 million for the 2020 season.

The Cowboys — who have been reluctant to sign Prescott to a long-term deal — will have to make a big decision. They can either franchise Prescott once again for a deal closer to $40 million or let the former fourth-round draft pick to walk and become a free agent.

If Jerry Jones elects to allow Prescott to become a free agent, some team is going to sign him to a huge contract.

Prescott is the latest player to be lost for the season by the Cowboys. The team has already lost offensive lineman Tyron Smith, offensive lineman La’el Collins, and tight end Blake Jarwin have been lost for the season.

Andy Dalton — who was released by the Cincinnati Bengals this off-season — will be the Cowboys starter for the rest of the season. The Texas native signed a one-year deal with the team following his Bengals release.
