The University of Alabama’s football team is the new BCS National Champion.
The Tide became the first team to ever win a BCS bowl by shutting their opponent out. It is also their second National Championship in three years.
Yet, the way they won the game was a bit nontraditional. They rode the right leg of its kicker much throughout the game.
In the November match up, the Tide kickers struggled to make key field goals. But indoors, the kickers had a whole different effort.
The Tide made five field goals in the game. Jeremy Shelley’s right leg accounted for most of the points, kicking his way to a record-tying mark for field goals in the game.
“That was the message before the game: to finish,” coach Nick Saban said. “In fact, it was how bad do you want to finish? We certainly didn’t play a perfect game, we got a field goal blocked, we couldn’t find the end zone for a long time, but we just kept playing.”
