Several teams have called the Tampa Bay Rays about pitcher James Shields.
The Rays are apparently are willing to deal Shields, Jeremy Hellickson, or David Price. But management is more willing to trade Shields than Hellickson, or Price.
The Rays are asking for the same package that they received from the Chicago Cubs last off-season for pitcher Matt Garza. The Minnesota Twins have talked to the Rays about Shields.
It is not clear what other teams have talked to the Rays about Shields.
“Oh, they’re open to it,” said an official of one team that checked in with the Rays. “They’re open to being overwhelmed.”
Shields is expected to make $9 million after the Rays picked up his option on Halloween. He also has a $12 million club option for the 2014 season.
He had 15 wins and 10 losses in 227.2 innings. He also had a 3.52 ERA in 33 starts.
He has a career 87-73 record with a 3.89 ERA.
