The Texas Rangers are close to signing free agent Lance Berkman.
The deal is pending, because Berkman still needs to pass a physical. The deal is reportedly for one-year with a 2014 vesting option.
He is expected to have the physical on Monday. He missed the majority of last season with torn cartilage in his right knee.
He only played in 32 games last season with the St. Louis Cardinals. He had a .259 batting average with two home runs and seven RBI’s in 81 at-bats.
He had a career .296 batting average with 360 home runs and 1,200 RBI’s in 1,806 games. He played with the Houston Astros from 1999 to 2010, then was traded to the New York Yankees in a mid-season deal.
He played the 2011 and 2012 season with the Cardinals. He was apart of the Cardinals 2011 World Series Championship team.
