“While the legal process is very much in the formative stages, I feel very strongly that this move is in the best interest of our organization,” general manager Eric Tillman said. “Hakim and his family are fine people and they will remain in our thoughts and prayers during this process.

“Nevertheless, we have a moral responsibility to place the good name of our organization ahead of any individual circumstance. This is not a rush to judgment in this particular legal matter, but, given Hakim’s challenges in the past, this is a truly sad but necessary step we feel is in the best interest of our team. Again, our hearts go out to the entire Hill family.”

The move has come just five days following his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving and disorderly conduct.

According to the Arizona Republic, he was involved in an incident in the early morning hours on Feb. 24 that was a shouting match outside of a motel in Scottsdale, according to the police documents.

The incident in question also involved his brother Khalil Hill, who is also a Roughriders wide receiver, and two women. After Hakim allegedly greeted the officers, he attempted to pay them for a ride.

“In terms of public reaction, I accept full responsibility for any criticism which may come,” Tillman said. “We made this contract offer after hours and hours of discussion with Hakim, his representatives, his parents and others close to him. Again, this matter has not gone through the legal process, but Kent and I are very committed to giving this province and our wonderful fans a team they can be proud of on and off the field.

“In human terms, this is so sad, but from day one, we have acknowledged that we feel very, very strongly about the image of this province and our football team.”
