Wheldon wins XM Satellite Radio 300 in 2007 season-opener

IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon won the XM Satellite Radio 300 on Saturday. He won the event in nearly two hours at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida.

This was Wheldon’s first win since the 2006 season. He won two races during that campaign.

Wheldon previously won the 2006 Peak Antifreeze Indy 300 presented by Mr. Clean on Sunday, September 10th, 2006. He won the race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois.

The England native began this season on the pole. He won his second race after beginning the race on the pole.

His very first win also came from the pole at the 2004 Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi Superspeedway on Saturday, April 17th, 2004, in Motegi City, Japan.

Chip Ganassi Racing swept the top two positions. Scott Dixon finished in the second position. Both Wheldon and Dixon had Target entries in the race.

Wheldon dominated the race. He led 179 of the possible 200 laps.

Dixon also led 15 laps. Tony Kanaan and Kosuke Matsuura led three laps each.

Wheldon is the early points leader with 53 points. Dixon is second with 40 and Sam Hornish Jr. rounds out the Top 3 with 35 points.
