The Seattle Mariners have signed free agent pitcher Carlos Silva. He signed a four-year deal with the team.
The right-handed pitcher reportedly signed for $48 million. He was one of the most coveted pitchers on the free agent market.
“It’s my favorite stadium,” Silva said. “It’s like a pitcher’s stadium. [Safeco is] going to be a big difference. I’m a sinker-ball pitcher. Here, we’re going to have grass. We have [Adrian] Beltre as the third baseman, [Yuniesky] Betancourt at shortstop, and [Jose] Lopez at second base. It’s like, just throw the ball. Just hit the glove.”

He signed with the Mariners after they lost out in the pursuit of free agent pitcher Hiroki Kuroda, who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Once Kuroda signed with the Dodgers, Silva then became the focus of the Mariners.
Silva went 13-14 during the 2007 season with the Minnesota Twins. He had 33 starts with two complete games and one shutout.
Silva allowed 229 hits in 202 innings with a 4.19 ERA.

“He is an innings-eater and strike thrower, and that’s a good combination,” manager John McLaren said. “We always preach to our starters to pitch as deep into the game as they can, and he likes to go deep into the game. If we do that, our bullpen would be better because we wouldn’t have to overwork them. He’s a good competitor, a veteran, and he’ll complement Washburn and Batista and help Felix out.”
