Kings draft Broncs’ Thompson with 12th pick in 2008 NBA Draft

The Sacramento Kings drafted power forward Jason Thompson with the 12th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. He previously played for the Rider Broncs.

He is joining a team that went 38-44 during the 2007-08 season. The team averaged 102.5 points per game.

The Kings had four power forwards during the 2007-08 season. These include Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Mikki Moore, Kenny Thomas, and Shelden Williams.

Kevin Martin was the team’s leading scorer with 23.7 points. Martin was followed by forward Metta World Peace, who averaged 20.5 points per game. Both Martin and World Peace were the only players, who averaged over 20 points per contest.

Amongst the power forwards, Moore had the highest scoring average. He averaged 8.5 points per game.

Thompson played four seasons for the Broncs. He appeared in 122 games, including 112 starts.

In his collegiate career, he averaged 16.7 points per game, with 9.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 0.9 steals, and 1.9 blocks per game in 32.1 minutes per game. In 34 starts during the 2007-08 season, he averaged a collegiate-high 20.4 points, 12.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 2.7 blocks per game in 34.6 minutes per contest.

He is just the second player from Rider, who will have an opportunity to play in the NBA. Herb Krautblatt was the first to do it in 1948.

This pick was the team’s highest draft pick since the 2007 NBA Draft. With the 10th overall pick in that draft, the team selected Spencer Hawes.
