The Illinois Fighting Illini has hired former Arkansas Razorbacks offensive coordinator Paul Petrino to be its next offensive coordinator. Petrino is the brother of Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino.

Together the brothers ran the eighth-best offense in the country in scoring and it was 10th overall in passing. They were 14th in total yards.

With the Razorbacks, Petrino helped guide Razorbacks quarterback Ryan Mallett, who transferred to the school from the Michigan Wolverines, had 3,422 yards with 29 touchdowns this season. He’ll have one more game to add to those stats, as the Razorbacks play the East Carolina Pirates on Jan. 2 in the Liberty Bowl.

He was offered the opportunity to lead the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers program, but turned it down. He was also in the mix to be the Marshall Thundering Herd head football coach.

This season was his second season with the Razorbacks. Prior to that, he was on the same staff with his brother with the Louisville Cardinals and the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.

He’s expected to receive a raise compared to the $308,000 he was making this season. The Fighting Illini are coming off of a 3-9 record this season.
