According to reports, the New York Rangers are interested in acquiring a big star before the trade deadline. Rangers General Manager Glen Sather has his sights on Dallas Stars forward Brad Richards.

While he is interested in Richards, Sather is not willing to mortgage the future. He is not willing to give up any of the team’s young players to make such a deal.

He is hoping that the Stars would be willing to play ball like the Florida Panthers did. On Saturday, Sather traded Tim Kennedy and a third-round draft pick to the Panthers for Bryan McCabe.

The likelihood in order to acquire Richards without going over the team’s salary cap, Matt Gilroy would likely have to be involved in any such deal. But would the Stars be interested in him in return? We are not sure.

Gilroy has a $1.75 million salary cap hit.

Richards has been generating trade interest despite being sidelined with concussion-like symptoms. He last played on February 13th in a loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Since January 1st, Richards has scored seven goals in 17 games. He had scored a goal in three straight games before being injured against the Blue Jackets.

At press time, it is not clear when he will return from his concussion. This could be a week-to-week thing or potentially even longer.

The Stars are in a tough position, as they may not be able to re-sign Richards. The free agent to be will likely depart as the Stars ownership group is up in the air.

Thus, this has made things difficult for the front office to make moves and re-sign players.
