Former Auburn Tigers quarterback Cam Newton’s character has come into question again. Newton has been criticized after Pro Football Weekly’s Draft Analyst Nolan Nawrocki gave Newton a brutal scouting report.

But he has at least one NFL GM in his corner right now. Carolina Panthers GM Marty Hurney, whose team holds the No. 1 overall pick in this month’s draft, said, “I don’t pay much attention (to that). (Nolan Nawrocki) has never met Cam Newton. So who’s he talked to? He says he’s talking to decision-makers. We have the No. 1 pick. He hasn’t talked to me.”

Hurney is also very confident in last year’s Panthers second-round pick Jimmy Clausen, but he went especially out of his way to defend Newton against the attack from Nawrocki.

Hurney also added, “Nawrocki did his job, he’s selling books.”

Newton had a breakthrough season with the Auburn Tigers in 2010. It was his lone season as a starter in college football at the FBS level.

He went 185 of 280 for 2,854 yards in 14 games. He also had 30 touchdown passes and seven interceptions.

Newton won the Heisman Trophy for his performances during the 2010 season. He also won the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, and was named an All-American.

In his final college game in the BCS National Championship game, he went 20 of 34 for 265 yards. He also had two touchdowns and an interception in the Tigers’ win over the Oregon Ducks.

Newton had just two games, where he surpassed 300 passing yards in the season. He first had 317 passing yards in the Tigers’ win over Chattanooga Mocs on November 6th.

Several weeks later, he had 335 passing yards in a win against the South Carolina Gamecocks on December 4th.
