Steve Lavin is dealing with something much more than basketball right now.
Lavin, who just finished his first-year as the St. John’s men’s basketball head coach, has announced that he has prostate cancer. But, according to Lavin, his doctor believes that he’ll be able to keep coaching and make a complete recovery.
Lavin said in a statement today that he was diagnosed in September, but was told to delay treatment until after the season. He is expected to begin treatment in the coming weeks.
“I expect a complete cure of Coach Lavin’s condition and anticipate a seamless continuation of his coaching duties,” said Dr. Jonathan Schiff, who is monitoring Lavin’s condition.
