Yesenia Torres has been named the recipient of the 2011 SWAC Softball Player of the Year. The Texas Southern junior catcher received the most votes from the leagues’ head coaches and Sports Information Directors (SIDs).
In addition to winning the Player of the Year, Torres has also been named the Newcomer of the Year. She was fifth in the league with a 4.36 batting average.
Torres was first with 58 home and 50 RBI’s. She also led her team in eight different categories.
She had seven home runs, which was tied for second in the league.
She had a 10-1 record with a 0.72 ERA. She also struck out a conference-high 59 batters over the course of 67.2 innings.
Fatima Alvizo, Texas Southern, has won the Freshman of the Year Award. Misty Cosby, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, won the Hitter of the Year Award. Texas Southern head coach Worley Barker has received the Coach of the Year Award.
