Newton Square, PA – The AT&T National saw the course record change hands multiple times on Saturday. The previous record coming into the day was a 64.
K.J. Choi tied the course record on Friday that was previously held by Justin Rose since last year. But there’s a new record holder. Nick Watney shot a 62 at the Aronimink Golf Course.

“Well, I guess anything is possible, but I don’t think you ever expect to shoot that low,” said Watney. “You don’t go on to the golf course very often anticipating a 62. You know, I’m very pleased with (yesterday).”

Watney is currently tied atop the leaderboard. Rickie Fowler is tied with Watney after shooting a 64 in the third round.
“I mean, like you said, I’ve been in a similar position before,” said Fowler. “I’ve played in final groups and played in contention. I think the biggest thing is just to go out and be patient, not get ahead of myself and not get too excited or anxious, so kind of just sit back, relax, go through things the same way tonight, and just go have some fun (today).”
Watney will have a tough time trying to match his career best later today when the leaders tee off. However, his career-best is not a course record for the AT&T National, as he is now currently tied with two others for the lowest score.
Anthony Kim, who did not make the cut of the AT&T National, and Hunter Mahan set the record with a 62 at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland in 2009.
Watney set the record after a pair of golfers set a record with a 63. Chris Kirk was the first to get a 63, and then Steve Marino tied his mark before Watney broke it.
“I don’t know,” said Watney of the 62, 63, and 64 scores. “I think the greens are a bit softer than they could have been. I heard they put some water on them. They gave us a drivable par-4. Other than that, I mean, I guess the greens are so good that you can start making putts. But I’m not sure why there are so many low scores (yesterday) whereas the first six rounds here it was very difficult.”
Marino’s career-best was a 59 at the Sidney Frank Memorial Tour Championship in 2006.
The 63 was a career-best by Kirk. His previous low was a 64 at the Bob Hope Classic in the third round in January of this year.
“Starting with the first hole, I hit my drive over there to the right in the rough, drew kind of a deep lie, and was able to hit a good shot out to about 15 feet behind the hole,” said Kirk. “And had a downhill 15-footer that broke about three feet left to right and made it right in the middle of the hole. So from then on, it just kind of kept going that way.”
Watney scored an -8 under on the day. He was the only one to break -8 under in the third round.
Marino and Kirk both had a -7 under. Marino is currently -7, while Kirk is -6 going into the final round.
“I think they had to have watered the greens or something (Friday night),” said Marino. “They were nice with the pins in some accessible spots. I’m not the only one to shoot a number out there. I don’t know what they’re going to do tonight, but I don’t think they’re going to water the greens. I think they might be a little mean (today).”
Choi went into the day as the leader with a -7, while struggling throughout the day. Choi earned -1 on the day to improve to -8 and is currently listed in third place.
Marino is in fourth place with Webb Simpson and Adam Scott. All three golfers are currently -7. Besides Marino’s -7 on the day, Simpson went -6 and Scott went -4.

Haas and Stroud earned a -4 in the third round, while Molder and Overton had a -2. Wi had a -1.
