Kent Richardson, a wide receiver and defensive back with the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League, recently took time to do a Question and Answer session with The Capital Sports Report. His interview is about his sports career and views.
TCSR: Could you talk about playing at Jay Rickards High School?
KR: “It was nice. That’s where I developed all my skills. I had a good time playing there.”

TCSR: What was it like playing in the Florida Football All-Star game?
KR: “You got to see all the other top players in the State, then compete against them. It allowed you to showcase your talents to colleges to show them how good you are.”
TCSR: Why did you choose to go to West Virginia?
KR: “Throughout my recruiting process, I had received offers from several teams. But when my senior year came, many of those teams went on to change head coaches, which left West Virginia as the only team with stability at the head coaching position. They came after me my junior year and stuck with me through the rest of my college career.”
TCSR: Rich Rodriguez was your head coach at West Virginia. What was it like playing for him?
KR: “It was an experience. I would encourage anybody to play for him. He’s a tough coach – he’s going to tell you when you did something wrong – but hug you when you did something good.”
TCSR: When Rodriguez left for the University of Michigan, Bill Stewart took over the reins as the West Virginia head coach. What was it playing for Stewart?
KR: “Coach Stewart is also a good coach. I had a great time playing under him. He had some good coaches on his staff that made us better players.”
TCSR: Several months ago, the University of Michigan decided to let Rodriguez go and bring in Brady Hoke as their new head coach. What do you think about Rodriguez currently being out of football?
KR: “I feel like it won’t last long. He’ll find a job soon.”
TCSR: Bill Stewart was recently fired as the West Virginia head coach. Do you have any thoughts on that?
KR: “I really can’t speak on that, because I don’t know what happened. I only heard press reports and what I heard, that isn’t the coach Stewart that I know from playing for him. Coach Stewart is still a great guy. He still has my respect.”
TCSR: After your college career, you signed a contract to attend the Green Bay Packers training camp last year. Could you talk about that experience?
KR: “That was a good experience. I was taught by many great head coaches up there, including head coach Mike McCarthy. Unfortunately, they couldn’t keep me and it was unfortunate for me that they went to the Super Bowl. I wish the best of luck to them.”

TCSR: Being that the Packers were in the Super Bowl, I’m sure you probably watched the game. What were your thoughts when you saw them win the Super Bowl over the Steelers?
KR: “I was devastated because they had not called me back. Now, I come to realize that it wasn’t my time. When my time comes, I’m going to take full advantage of it.”
TCSR: After being released by the Packers, you signed with the Philadelphia Soul. Could you talk about playing in Philly?
KR: “I enjoy playing for the Soul. It’s not playing outdoors like I had hoped. But this makes you improve your skills, and if you ever get that opportunity, you have a chance to be successful in the NFL. If Kurt (Warner) can do it, anybody can do it.”
