The 2011 Indianapolis 500 winner was involved in an accident on Lap 11. Wade Cunningham’s car was clipped, which caused 15 cars to crash between Turn One and Turn Two.

“Things happen in this kind of racing,” Cunningham said, also caught up in the wreck. “It’s so close. Not much room for error. I was near the front of what caused all this, so I’m not thrilled about it. At  this point, whose fault it was is kind of immaterial.”

J.R. Hildebrand was trying to avoid the collision drove over the rear of Cunningham’s car. Wheldon, who was 24th at the time, steered his car away from the apron; however, he collided with a slower car and went into the car.

His car rotated and traveled into the catch fence. Wheldon was extricated and airlifted to a nearby hospital.

However, he was pronounced dead at 1:54 pm local time. It’s reportedly believed that he suffered blunt force trauma that led to his death.

Wheldon’s death is the first in an IndyCar race since Paul Dana in 2006. The significant crash also caused injuries to Pippa Mann and Hildebrand.

“IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries,” Randy Bernard said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race.”
