His son, Jimmy Rathmann, reportedly notified Indianapolis Motor Speedway that his father had passed away. Rathmann was the 1960 Indianapolis 500 winner.

In addition, Rathmann finished second in the Indianapolis 500 in 1952, 1957, and 1959. He was inducted into the Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1993.

Normally, Rathmann would make his way back to Indianapolis for the Indianapolis 500. However, in May 2011, he was not able to attend the marquee event due to his health issues.

He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2007.

Rathmann won the 500-mile Race of Two Worlds in Monza, Italy in 1958.

Plus, Rathmann has competed in three NASCAR races outside of IndyCar. He raced in 42 IndyCar races.

Rathmann — who was born Royal Richard Rathmann — also competed in Champ Cars, where he competed in 38 races in 14 years. He also competed in Formula One.
