The Golden State Warriors have signed rookie forward Klay Thompson to a two-year deal. It is worth $4.4 million.
The deal includes an option for two additional years. If the Warriors do pick up the option, it would be $5.7 million.
Thompson was the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.
Depending on what first-year head coach Mark Jackson wants to do, Thompson may receive time off of the bench as he adjusts to the NBA before eventually moving into the starting lineup. The Warriors hope that he will be in the starting lineup one day.
The son of former NBA player Mychal Thompson is expected to be a small forward for the Warriors. Currently in that position is Rodney Carney, Reggie Williams, and Dorell Wright.
Thompson is joining a team that went 36-46 in the Western Conference and was third overall in the NBA Pacific Division.
He will work with Jackson, who replaced Keith Smart. Jackson is taking over a team that averaged 103.4 points per game, which was 7th-best in the league.
Thompson is joining a roster led by Monta Ellis, who scored 24.1 points per game. The Warriors had four players in double-figures.
Stephen Curry was next with 18.6 points per game. David Lee averaged 16.5 points per game, while Wright averaged 16.4 points per game.
