Vic Koenning will now relocate to North Carolina to join the North Carolina Tar Heels coaching staff. He will become the defensive coordinator under Larry Fedora’s new coaching staff there.
Just hours ago, he served as interim head coach for the University of Illinois.
He coached the Fighting Illini in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco, California, winning 20-14 over the UCLA Bruins. It was Koenning’s first head coaching win since 2002 when he finished 2-10 at Wyoming, his final season of a three-year (5-29) tenure there.

After new head coach Tim Beckman took over, he offered Koenning an opportunity to stay at Illinois. But decided against it and rejected Beckman’s offer.
This season, Koenning’s defense was ranked seventh overall in the country. And his pass defense was fourth in the country.
He was the Fighting Illini Defensive Coordinator for two seasons before being promoted to Interim Head Coach. He was the Kansas State Wildcats Assistant Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs Coach in 2009.
In addition, he was the Clemson Tigers Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach from 2005 through 2008. He also was the Troy Trojans Defensive Coordinator in 2003 and 2004.

He was the Wyoming Cowboys head coach from 2000 through 2002. Plus, he was the Cowboys Defensive Coordinator from 1997 through 1999.
Koenning was the Memphis State/Memphis Tigers Defensive Backs Coach from 1991 through 1996. He began his coaching career as the Memphis State Tigers Graduate Assistant Coach from 1986 through 1990.
