The Atlanta Falcons are a day into their off-season and have already lost a coaching staff member. Falcons Defensive Coordinator Brian VanGorder has accepted a position at the University of Auburn as their Defensive Coordinator.
After back-to-back playoff collapses, VanGorder was rumored to lose his job.
He was an obvious candidate to be the scapegoat for the losses. Yet, he was working under defensive-minded head coach Mike Smith.

He spent four years as the Falcons Defensive Coordinator after coaching the team’s linebackers in 2007. He has extensive college coaching experience and was last a college coach in 2006 when he was Georgia Southern’s head coach.
The Falcons went 10-6 during the regular season. However, in the Wild Card Round, they were defeated 24-2 by the New York Giants.
Typically, after a season, the head coach changes the coaching staff even when the team has a winning record, there may be changes. This happens the most during the NFL and college football seasons.
VanGorder returns to the college ranks, where he hasn’t been since the 2006 season. That’s when he served as the Georgia Southern Eagles head coach.
He went 3-8 that season. He then resigned following the season and ultimately landed on his feet with the Falcons.

Outside of coaching in college football at Georgia Southern, he also served as the Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2001 through 2004. He also spent one season at Western Illinois as their defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2000.
VanGorder also served as the Central Michigan defensive coordinator in 1998 and 1999. He was on the UCF Staff from 1995 through 1997.
He also was the Wayne State (Michigan) head coach for three seasons in 1992 through 1994. As their head coach, he went 16-17.
VanGorder began his college football coaching career at Grand Valley State, where he coached from 1989 through 1991. He was a high school coach from 1981 through 1988 at several schools.
