Southern Methodist University has hired Jason Phillips to be an assistant coach.

His official capacity is to be determined. But it is likely that he will become the team’s new offensive coordinator.

Prior to his arrival, he was the Houston Cougars offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for nine years. He also served as the recruiting coordinator for the team.

“We drafted Jason when I was with the Detroit Lions in 1989, and then I brought him to the Atlanta Falcons with me in 1992. He was a very competitive player and had great work ethic on and off the field,” said June Jones. “His receivers and the offenses that he has been a part of in his coaching career have been some of the best in the country and I’m excited to have him join our staff. He knows our offense from having played in it and I look forward to his input into what we do, along with what he brings to us from the offenses that he has been associated with in his coaching career. He has recruited Texas for close to 10 years, so he will have an impact there as well.”

He made his coaching debut with the Cougars, his alma mater, in 2001. He then moved onto Texas State in 2002, before going back to Houston in 2003.

He has also served offensive internships with the Minnesota Vikings and the Atlanta Falcons. He served his internship with the Vikings in 2001 and the Falcons in 2002.
