The Wayman Tisdale Humanitarian Award will be given to coach K in April
Coach K will be honored with a new award on April 16th.
Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski will receive the Wayman Tisdale Humanitarian Award at the second annual Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Banquet. Krzyzewski, who is the winningest head coach in men’s basketball history, will be present at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
The Tisdale awards are presented by Devon and the banquet is hosted by the Oklahoma City Downtown Club.
Coach K was selected as the Humanitarian Award, because it is given to an individual in college basketball that has made a significant positive impact on society. Last year, legendary ESPN and Hall of Fame broadcaster Dick Vitale won the award.
He has 913 wins in his career, with 840 at Duke. In December, he was selected as the Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year.
“This has been a landmark year for Coach K and having him as our recipient this year seems most appropriate,” said Drew Shields, 2012 chairman of the Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award Advisory Board. “He is one of the few people in college basketball to have accomplished as much off the court as he has on.”
