The Chicago Bears may be interested in free-agent quarterback David Garrard. If signed, he would be a backup to starting quarterback Jay Cutler, who has gotten hurt late in the season the past two years.
The Bears do not have to wait until March 13, the beginning of free agency, to sign Garrard. He was released last year and did not sign with another team.

Thus, he is eligible to sign with any team immediately.

New Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice was on the Jacksonville Jaguars staff when Garrard started in the league in 2002. The Bears have not had a serviceable backup in a very long time.
As we reported, Cutler was injured in the Bears’ playoff game against the Green Bay Packers. He sprained his MCL.
The team had to go to Todd Collins and Caleb Haine. However, they struggled and the Bears ultimately lost to the Packers 21-14.
Before being injured against the Packers, Cutler went 6 of 14 for 80 yards. He also had one interception.
Garrard — who last played in the league at 32 — went 8-6 in 14 starts with the Jaguars during the 2010 season. That season, he went 236 of 366 for 2,734 yards.

He had 23 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions.
As a starter in the NFL, Garrard is 39-37 in 76 starts with the Jaguars from 2002 through 2010. His best season as a starter came during the 2007 season when he went 9-3 in 12 starts.
His best passing season came during the 2008 season when he had 3,620 passing yards despite going 5-11 as a starter. He also had a career-high 23 touchdown passes during the 2010 season.
