Central Michigan fires men’s basketball head coach Ernie Zeigler

The Central Michigan Chippewas has fired men’s basketball head coach Ernie Zeigler. He led the program for the past six seasons.

He was hired by the school before the start of the 2006-07 season. As the Chippewas head coach, he went 75-111.

“After a thorough review of the program, a change in leadership is needed in order to improve the overall performance of the program,” Athletic Director Dave Heeke said. “I appreciate Coach Zeigler’s commitment to Central Michigan University and his hard work on and off the court. We wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors”

He had two years left on his contract. Zeigler, according to the Associated Press, will receive a buyout from the school worth $368,437.

He signed an extension in April 2010. Almost one year later, he was fired.

In his final two seasons with the Chippewas, the team went 21-42. He never had a season above .500 at the school.

During the 2009-10 season, he guided the Chippewas to a 15-15 regular season record. They were 9-7 during the Mid-American Conference that season.

He came to Central Michigan after being an assistant coach with the UCLA Bruins. He also worked with the Pittsburgh Panthers, Bowling Green Falcons, and the Kansas State Wildcats.
