New Jersey Devils player Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 400th NHL goal against the Ottawa Senators. This came in the Devils’ 1-0 win at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Kovalchuk reportedly was able to get the puck. Teammate Andy Greene reportedly picked it up after the goal.

“I’m going to keep that one,” Kovalchuk said. “It wasn’t much of a celebration. Hopefully, when I score my 500th it’s going to be a little more exciting.”

Devils head coach Peter DeBoer said that this was a big goal for Kovalchuk. The milestone goal came in the second period at the 2:40 mark.

“It was a big goal,” DeBoer said. “That’s what he does. It was probably appropriate that he scored his 400th the way he did. I think that was a textbook Kovalchuk goal, a one-timer from the off-side top shelf.”

The goal was Kovalchuk’s 31st goal of the season. In his career, he is averaging a goal every 0.5 games in the regular season.

He also had 31 goals last season. His career-best is 52 goals, which he established in 2005-06 and 2007-08 with the Atlanta Thrashers, now the Winnipeg Jets franchise.

Kovalchuk has now scored 400 goals in 771 games in the league. He now has the third-most goals amongst active players.

Teemu Selanne has 700 goals. Jaromir Jagr has 742 goals.

“It’s always exciting when you score, especially it was a big game for us,” Kovalchuk said. “But I think Moose (goalie Johan Hedberg) was outstanding and that’s the reason we won.

“I’ve never seen anybody work harder than this guy in practice. Every day he shows up and when he gets a chance, he plays unbelievable. We have two great goalies and we’re very confident in both of them.”
