Illinois is expected to hire former Ohio men’s basketball coach John Groce to the same position.

An official announcement is expected to come in the next several days barring any unforseen changes. Groce would replace Bruce Weber, who was fired after the season.

The Illini turned their attention to Groce after they got rejected by Brad Stevens, who said he’s staying at Butler. Ilinois also tried to hire Shaka Smart away from VCU, but he decided to stay put, as well.

The Bobcats went 29-7 this season and made it to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Ohio lost to North Carolina in overtime, 73-65, on Friday night.
