New Penn State head football coach Bill O’Brien is embarking on a nine-day, 18-stop bus tour. O’Brien will take three weeks to complete the trip.

He will travel to seven states with meet-and-greet sessions along the way. The tour is expected to begin in Philadelphia later today.

O’Brien is using this opportunity to promote Penn State, as the rookie head coach took over the high-profile team after the death of legendary head coach Joe Paterno.

“I’m looking forward to meeting everybody out on the road — the alumni, the fans — and talking to people about my vision of the football program,” O’Brien said.

Paterno passed away in January. Paterno used to appear on Penn State caravans before he was affected by health issues in recent years.

“Joe was a living legend, and the head football coach for nearly 50 years. I’m not sure how many caravans he had to do,” O’Brien said recently. “I think I have to reach out to make sure people get to know me.”

O’Brien is trying to change the image of Penn State in recent months, as the football program has been in chaos after Paterno was fired in November shortly after former assistant Jerry Sandusky was arrested for a child sexual abuse scandal.

The new head coach is taking over a team that went 9-4 during the 2011 season. Paterno guided the team to an 8-1 record.

Then, Tom Bradley went 1-3 in the season’s final four games as interim head coach. This included a loss in the Ticket City Bowl.

O’Brien is taking over a team that has not had a losing record since the 2004 season. That’s when the team went 4-7 overall and 2-6 within conference play.
