Mavericks claim Elton Brand off waivers from the 76ers

Elton Brand has a new home, as he has been picked up by the Dallas Mavericks. He was claimed off of waivers after the Philadelphia 76ers decided to waive him.

The 76ers tried to get rid of Brand ever since they signed him to a massive contract a few years ago, but no team was willing to take on the contract. So, as a result, the 76ers had to eat Brand’s contract and give him the one-time amnesty provision by releasing him.

The Mavericks are expected to pay Brand $2.1 million this season. The 76ers will have to pay $18.2 million.

This is the latest roster move by the Mavericks in recent days. Brand is the fourth veteran added in the past few days.

The team signed Chris Kaman to a contract for this season, then acquired Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones from the Indiana Pacers in a trade. Like those players, he’s expected to add depth off the bench.

Brand averaged 11 points and 7.2 rebounds in 60 games last season. However, his play dropped off in the playoffs, where he averaged 8.6 points and 4.8 rebounds in limited playing time.

He has played in 860 games in his career with the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers, and 76ers. He was the No. 1 overall pick by the Bulls in 1999.
