The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team has announced that they’ve suspended starting running back Cierre Wood for two games after he violated team rules. He’ll miss the Navy Midshipmen and Purdue Boilermaker games.
Last season, he led the Irish with 1,102 yards and nine touchdowns. He also averaged 5.1 yards per carry.
Wood, whose a senior, played in all 13 in 2011, while starting nine games. With the team without Wood, they’ll turn to Theo Riddick and George Atkinson III to carry the load until Wood returns.
“Our players are aware of the standards I set for our program and that failure to meet my expectations will result in consequences,” head coach Brian Kelly said. “Justin and Cierre violated our team rules, so I’ve suspended them for the first two games of the season.
Justin Utupo, a junior defensive end, played in 12 games last season. He was a reserve defensive end, who saw time mostly on special teams.
The Irish will also be without quarterback Tommy Reese and linebacker Carlo Calabrese for the season opener. They had a skirmish with police officers after an off-campus party in May.
