The Carolina Panthers have fired GM Marty Hurney. The Panthers made this move following a 19-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
With the loss, the Panthers fell to 1-5 on the season. The team has dropped their last four games after winning their first game in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
“This was an extremely difficult decision,” Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said. “Unfortunately, we have not enjoyed the success we hoped for in recent years. I have the greatest respect and admiration for Marty and will always appreciate the way he tirelessly served the organization.”

At the time of the publication, no interim GM announcement has been made yet.
Hurney is taking the blame for the Panthers’ lackluster season after going 6-10 during the 2011 season. Panthers head coach Ron Rivera and his coaching staff guided the team to the 28th-best offense at this time.
He signed running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart to new deals worth nearly $80 million. Yet, thus far this season, they have combined for 319 yards.
Hurney also signed quarterback Jake Delhomme, Charles Godfrey, and Jon Beason in the past few years. He also signed Charles Johnson to a $72 million deal last year.

“I am very fortunate to have been a part of one of the best organizations in the NFL since 1998,” Hurney said. “As general manager, I will always regret not helping us win the Super Bowl or having back-to-back winning seasons. I hope this change starts accomplishing the direction of those goals. I understand this decision by Mr. Richardson and will always have an extremely close relationship with him. I consider him the best owner in the NFL.”
