These past few weeks, Smith filled in for Dale Earnhardt Jr in the Sprint Cup Series with the No. 88 car. Dale Jr was forced to miss the past two weeks after having a concussion.

Dale Jr. is expected to return in the No. 88 car this week.

“This is an extremely good opportunity for me,” Smith said in a team statement. “Dale Jr. and I first started talking about this several years ago, but the timing never matched up to where we could make it happen. Now it’s time. I’m happy to be a part of this organization. I don’t want to just win races. I want to be the team that dominates races and contends for the championship.”

His last race in the Cup Series came in the Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, October 7th, 2012, in Talladega, Alabama. He finished fifth in the race in his Furniture Row/Denver Mattress entry for Barney Visser.

As the fill-in for Earnhardt Jr., he finished 38th with engine issues at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Then, in the following race, he finished seventh at Kansas.
