Arkansas State head coach Gus Malzahn is returning to Auburn. The Auburn football community was shocked when he left to take the head coaching position at State in 2011.
But he is being brought back in to restore the program after it has been on a downward spiral the past two seasons.
He helped Auburn to the 2010 championship with Cam Newton leading the charge at quarterback. Now, he wants to return that same high-powered offense to Auburn.

He has received a five-year deal worth $2.3 million annually. As Malzahn returned to Auburn, he was greeted by several hundred fans, who he high-fived.
“I recruited a lot of them and have very good relationships,” Malzahn said. “I just told them our expectations are to win championships. Whatever happened last year happened last year. It’s a new day. We’re going to put a good brand of football on the field and we’re going to have fun doing it.”
This past season, Malzahn led the Red Wolves to a 9-3 overall record, with losses to Oregon and Nebraska. The team won the Sun Belt Conference championship and will appear in the GoDaddy.com Bowl.
Malzahn will no longer coach in the Bowl game. Arkansas State will appoint an interim head coach for the game.
“I’m just tickled to death,” he said. “It’s a true honor for me to be the head coach of the Auburn Tigers. I spent three years here and I can honestly say it’s the best three years of my life. I feel connected forever.”
He replaces his former boss Gene Chizik, who was fired one a day after losing 49-0 to No. 2 ranked Alabama. The Tigers ended with a 3-9 season.

Malzahn arrived for his first tour at Auburn in 2009 after spending two seasons at Tulsa as their offensive coordinator and assistant coach in 2007 and 2008.
He was the Arkansas offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2006. Before this, he was a high school head coach in Arkansas from 1992 to 2005 with Hughes High School, Shiloh Christian High School, and Springdale High School.
He was also the Hughes High School defensive coordinator in 1991.
