Arkansas State has found its replacement for Gus Malzahn. Their former head coach departed the school to become the Auburn Tigers’ head football coach.

The Red Wolves have hired the former Texas Longhorns offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin as its new head coach. Harsin was the Texas offensive coordinator for two seasons after spending the past 10 years on the Boise State coaching staff.

“We are extremely excited to name Bryan Harsin as our new head football coach,” said Red Wolves athletics director Terry Mohajir. “Coach Harsin has a proven track record of success, helping produce one of the best football brands in the country and also working with one of the top programs of all time. He has strong experience developing quarterbacks, which was important to me, and always puts his players first.”

Harsin takes over a Red Wolves team that went 9-3 this season. Malzahn guided the team to the Sun Belt Conference championship before leaving.

“This is a tremendous honor to be the head football coach at Arkansas State University,” said Harsin. “I’ve prepared a long time for this opportunity, and I’m looking forward to building on a strong foundation already in place here. I’ve felt the enthusiasm surrounding this program, and that is very exciting.”

This will be Harsin’s first head coaching opportunity. Besides working for the Broncos and Longhorns, he also served as Eastern Oregon running backs and wide receivers coach in 2000. He attended Boise State from 1995 through 1999.
