The Virginia Cavaliers football team thought they were finished with hiring coaches to Mike London’s staff since the end of the season.

They thought they filled the position with Jeff Banks joining the staff as the special teams coach. But several days later, Banks decided to leave the program and London was looking to fill Banks’ old position.

Now, London has hired Larry Lewis to be the new special teams’ coordinator. Lewis will be given an addition role to be the running backs coach, as well.

He reportedly signed a two-year contract to be on London’s staff. He will make $220,000 per season.

Lewis spent last season at Nevada and prior to that, he spent four seasons at Colorado State.

“Larry Lewis has probably been coaching special teams for as long as anyone in college football and we’re really fortunate to have him join our staff,” London said. “On the offensive side of the ball, he has worked for some very successful and innovative coaches out west and coached two of the nation’s top running backs over the past two seasons. Larry is high energy and our players are going to enjoy his style. It is ironic that Jeff Banks played for Larry at Washington State. I guess you could say we’ve gone from the pupil to the teacher.”
