Toronto FC signs veteran midfielder Julio Cesar

Toronto FC has signed veteran midfielder Júlio César Santos Correa. He is commonly known as Júlio César.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The length of the contract is also not known at this time.

This will be his second stint in Major League Soccer. He spent the last two seasons with Sporting Kansas City during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

“It’s important that Toronto FC becomes a more difficult team to play against this year,” Toronto FC GM and President, Kevin Payne said. “Julio Cesar will be an important part of the backbone of our team in the middle of the field. He’s a tough, experienced, committed player, who was a big part of Sporting Kansas City’s success over the past two years, and we’re very pleased he will be a part of TFC this season.”

With Sporting Kansas City, he appeared in 54 games. He made 50 starts.

In the aforementioned 50 starts, he had three goals and three assists. He had six combined points in two seasons.

César scored his last goal in a 2-0 win over Toronto FC on June 16th, 2012. He scored on the Graham Zusi assisted goal during the 35th minute.

This was his lone goal of the season.

The journeyman began his career as a 17-year-old with Valladolid in Spain in La Liga. Before he joined Sporting Kansas City, he played for 10 teams

Despite his path that took him to many different teams, he was known for scoring. He had a career-high five goals with Olympiacos during the 2006-07 season in 27 matches.
