Rob Ryan said when the Dallas Cowboys fired him that he would be out of work for 5 minutes.
Well, that wasn’t exactly the case, as it has been several weeks since he was fired. Yet, he has officially been hired by the New Orleans Saints as their new defensive coordinator.
He briefly flirted with the St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator position. Then, the next time he came to the Rams facility, which was about two days later, he was informed that he no longer had a job.
He was let go after Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said it wasn’t a right scheme fit.
However, his name first appeared on the Saints radar earlier this week. He faces a fall task of turning around the league’s worst – 32nd overall – defense this past season.
The Saints will move from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 defense under Ryan. And the move would mean the team has to revamp their front-seven personnel to fit his system.
Yet, Ryan has some building blocks to build around on defense. Cameron Jordan and Akiem Hicks are two young players that should exceed under Ryan.
