The Cleveland Cavaliers have fired head coach Byron Scott. He led the team for three seasons.

As the Cavaliers’ head coach, Scott went 64-166. He had three losing seasons with the team.

The Cavaliers were hampered by injuries this past season. Yet, they did show some progress.

The team informed Scott that he would not return on Thursday. This came one day after the team concluded their season with a 24-58 record.

He had one year left on his contract. The Cavaliers had picked up his option for 2013-14 this past October.

“I wish Byron Scott and his entire family the best going forward,” Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said in a release. “Byron is a class guy, both on and off the court, and I thank him for his three years of coaching the Cavaliers. I fully support the difficult move that was made today. Although we saw progress with young individual player development, we did not see the kind of progress we expected on the team level this past season.

“We understand it was challenging with the injuries, but when you are at our stage in the building process, you don’t only measure team progress in wins and losses.”

The three years under Scott were among the worst in the Cavaliers’ history. It did not do any better that Scott took over the franchise after superstar LeBron James left for the Miami Heat.

This is the team’s second coaching change in the past four seasons. Mike Brown was fired in 2010 after being the team’s head coach for the last five seasons.

Scott complained about his young squad many times this season. He complained that they were not scoring enough.

At one point, the Cavaliers lost 10 straight games during the season.

“I want to thank Chris Grant, Dan Gilbert, and the Cavaliers organization for the opportunity I had to coach this team the last three seasons,” Scott said in a team release. “I am certainly proud of the progress that many of our players have made and greatly appreciate the dedication of my coaches and our team in our efforts to attain the success we all desired.”
