Atlanta Hawks head coach Larry Drew is on the outside, looking in. See, the team is already giving hints that a move could be forthcoming.

Management has put it out to the public that he will not be back. They have not told him with words.

But their actions have said so. According to Yahoo Sports, Hawks management has interviewed Nate McMillan for their head coaching position.

The problem? Drew is currently the coach of the team. He is technically the head coach through June 30th.

That’s when his contract expires. At this time, he has not been let go by the team.

Drew has been with the Hawks since the 2004 season. He has been the team’s head coach since the 2010-11 season.

When the team is already interviewing someone else, that means that your time is coming to an end. This is rare that a coach will be interviewed for a job that is currently being occupied by another coach.

Drew is 128-102 in 230 career games as the Hawks’ head coach. He has a .557 win percentage. He is also 10-14 in three playoff appearances with the team.

The Hawks have lost in the first round of the playoffs the past two seasons. In each series, they were defeated 4-2.

In 2011, the team advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Hawks GM Danny Ferry has expressed interest in hiring Stan Van Gundy. He was previously the Orlando Magic head coach.

Van Gundy was fired a year ago after numerous run-ins with Dwight Howard. If Ferry does an about-face, Drew could return to the Hawks with a new contract.

Obviously, this would come if Van Gundy, McMillan, or another coach says no to the team. At this time, it does not appear that Van Gundy will coach this season.

McMillan; however, has multiple suitors, as the Milwaukee Bucks and the Detroit Pistons are also interested in him. McMillan has been available since being fired by the Portland Trail Blazers mid-way through the 2011-12 season.

He was hired as the Trail Blazers’ head coach in the summer of 2005. As a head coach, McMillan is 478-452 with the Trail Blazers and the Seattle SuperSonics.

He has a .514 win percentage. McMillan has lost in the first round of the playoffs in his last three full seasons.

He missed the playoffs in his first three seasons with the team. With the SuperSonics, McMillan guided his team to the playoffs in two of his five seasons.

In 2005, he guided the Sonics to the Conference Semifinals. This happens to be the furthest that one of McMillan’s teams has advanced in the playoffs at this time.
