Devin Gardner has a new number.

The Michigan quarterback will no longer wear the No. 12 jersey that he previously wore. Hw will now wear the No. 98 jersey for the rest of his career.

Gardner will wear the jersey for the next two seasons, unless he elects to declare for the NFL draft following this season. It is quite odd to see a quarterback wear the No. 98 jersey.

In fact, he might be the first Division I quarterback to do this. Gardner is honoring the late Tom Harmon, who last wore the jersey.

And Harmon had the jersey retired before Gardner requested to wear it.

“It’s difficult to say how honored I am to wear No. 98,” Gardner said in a statement. “You see Tom Harmon photos and prints all over our building, knowing all the things he accomplished on the field for this program and then representing our country, and to have the opportunity to speak to his family today, it’s kind of surreal.

“I’m extremely humbled and blessed.”

Harmon was Michigan’s first Heisman Trophy winner, and won the prestigious award in 1940. He played three seasons at Michigan, where he had 2,134 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns, in addition to 16 touchdown passes.
