Derek Jeter’s historic career could be reaching its final days with the New York Yankees. The Yankees ended Jeter’s season by putting him on the disabled list earlier today.

Jeter has been hampered by a left ankle injury and has been battling soreness in his surgically repaired left ankle.

He has only play in 17 games in a pinstripe jersey this season. And the Yankees made a trade with the Seattle Mariners to acquire Brendan Ryan for the final three weeks.

In the 17 games, he had 12 hits with a .190 batting average. He had one home run and 7 RBIs on the season.

Of the 17 games, 13 games were at his natural shortstop position. The four additional games were played as a designated hitter.

The 17 games were the fewest amount of games that he played in a season since the 15 games he played in the 1995 season. He had 0 home runs and 7 RBI’s during the 15 games played in 1995.

No one could question the heart of Jeter, as he is the heart of the Yankees team. As he goes, the team goes, but the 39-year-old may not make it to a 20th year.

The last player to even play a 20th season and play in 100 games at shortstop was Rabbit Maranville in 1931. But with his injuries, it would be better for Jeter to retire than keep holding on to memories.

He played in a 159 games during the 2012 season, then broke his ankle in the postseason against the Detroit Tigers. After that, his career has been going downhill very fast.

At press time, Jeter does not have a contract for the 2014 season. Right now, there are no discussions on the sides to reach an agreement on another deal.
