The New York Yankees lost Mariano Rivera’s last home game. The Tampa Bay Rays won 4-0 over the Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi used Rivera as the third pitcher. With the Rays up 4-0, Girardi called on the future Hall of Famer. Iván Nova pitched seven innings, and Dellin Betances came in for one out.

The music hit, it’s Enter Sandman. Rivera came into the contest. This would be the final time that the Yankees fans heard his music.

Rivera helped the Yankees out of a jam in the eighth inning. Then, after 1 1/3 innings, he departed the game. He was replaced with one out remaining in the ninth inning.

With Rivera on the mound, he did not allow a single hit.

Instead of Girardi going out to get Rivera from the game, he asked Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter to remove their teammate from the contest.

“I was so thankful they came out,” Rivera said, who cried when they reached the mound.

All three men came to the Yankees in 1995. They were also joined by Jorge Posada, who also joined the team in 1995.

In their careers, these key players guided the Yankees to four World Series Championships together.

“I thought it was pretty cool,” Jeter said. “I’ve never taken a pitcher out before. We’ve all grown up together. It’s too bad good things have to come to an end.”

While this was Rivera’s night to be remembered in front of the home crowd, the Rays won the game. With the win, the Rays are one step closer to making the postseason.
