The Southern California Trojans have the hottest head football coaching job that’s current;y available.

Ed Orgeron has filled in on an interim basis after Lane Kiffin was fired. And he did a fairly good job with the team, including a huge win over No. 4 Stanford. He was 6-2 as the Trojans interim head coach.

And after Texas A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin decided that he wanted to stay in College Station, Texas for the next several years, Trojans athletic director Pat Haden had to find another favorite for the position. While Orgeron wants the job, he is not the favorite for the job right now.

According to ESPN’s Joe Schad, Boise State head football coach Chris Peterson and Vanderbilt head football coach James Franklin are the two top favorites for the position. Schad even says that the job could be filled as soon as this week.

Neither Peterson or Franklin has interviewed for the job, as of yet. Orgeron and Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio also interviewed for the job during the Broncos bye week.

But Del Rio is no longer expected to get the job unless something drastically changes.

“USC is prepared to make Orgeron the highest paid assistant and an associate head coach. He knew he lost the head job when he lost to UCLA,” ESPN’s Arash Markazi tweeted.

Orgeron’s chances of being the Trojans head coach reportedly ended when the Trojans lost at home to cross-town rivals UCLA, 35-14, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
