The Southern California (USC) Trojans have hired Steve Sarkisian as their next head football coach. He comes to California after serving as the Washington Huskies head coach.

He is taking over a program that was led by Lane Kiffin, before his firing. After Kiffin was fired, the school announced that Ed Orgeron would finish the season as an interim head coach.

In five seasons as the Huskies head coach, Sarkisian guided Washington to a 34-29 mark. He has returned the team to a respectable program after taking over a winless team before his arrival in 2009.

“I am extremely excited to be coming home to USC and for the opportunity that USC presents to win championships,” he said in a statement. “I can’t wait to get started.”

This past season, Sarkisian — who was one of the finalists with Orgeron — guided the Huskies to an 8-4 record. They also had a 5-4 record within the conference.

While Sarkisian received the job, the school’s first target was Boise State Broncos head coach Chris Petersen. However, he withdrew his name from consideration.

Also in the mix was Vanderbilt Commodores head coach James Franklin.

Sarkisian is no stranger to California. He is from Torrance, California, and was a student-athlete at El Camino Junior College.

After his playing career was over, Sarkisian was an assistant coach for the Trojans for seven seasons.

“We are delighted to welcome Steve Sarkisian back to the Trojan Family,” Haden said in a statement. “We conducted a very exhaustive and thorough search, pinpointing about 20 candidates and interviewing five of them. We kept coming back to Sark. He is the only one who was offered the job. I believe in my gut that he is the right coach for USC at this time.”
