The New Orleans Saints still have two games left in the regular season.
Yet, their management is already considering moves for the off-season. Word has gotten out that the Saints will release long-time Defensive End/Outside Linebacker Will Smith this off-season.
By releasing Smith, the Saints will receive $11.55 million in cap space. Also, by releasing him, it would close the gap of the nearly $17 million that the team is already over the 2014 salary cap.
Smith is presently on injured reserve with a torn ACL. The releasing of Smith is being called a no-brainer move by the team.
He will be 33-years-old this summer, and has spent his entire NFL career with the Saints. And he does not fit into Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan’s 3-4 defense.
He has not played at all this season. Last season, he had 58 tackles with 6 sacks.
He has been a member of the Saints defensive line since the 2004 season. The Ohio State product has not missed more than 2 games in a season before missing the entire year this season.
