Bobby Rahal will not be attempting a comeback after all. According to Rahal’s publicist, Kathi Lauterbach, it was an April Fools joke.

With that, Rahal will just watch his two cars attempt to qualify.

Graham Rahal, his son, will be driving the No. 15 National Guard IndyCar. His teammate Oriol Servia will drive the No. 16 entry in the most historic race outside of the Daytona 500.

The 61-year-old Rahal is no stranger to the Indianapolis 500, though. His first race was at the 1981 Indianapolis 500.

In 1986, as a driver, he would win the Indianapolis 500 with a dramatic pass in the final two laps. He would pass driver Kevin Cogan to win the Indy 500 just a day after his team owner Jim Trueman had passed away.

As a team owner, Rahal Letterman Lanigan has never won the Indy 500. For the past decade, the race has been dominated by foreign-born drivers.

An American driver hasn’t won the prestigious race since 2006. That year, Sam Hornish Jr., who now races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, won the Indy 500.

According to Racing Reference, Rahal appeared in CART from 1982 through 1998. In his 17-year career, he appeared in 264 races with 24 wins.

In 1982, he competed in 10 of the 11 races on the schedule. In 1998, as a 45-year-old driver, he appeared in 19 races.

While he had 24 wins, Rahal last had a win during the 1992 season when he had 4. He had wins in the 1982 through 1989 seasons then again in 1991 and 1992.

Outside of the CART series, Rahal also competed in one NASCAR Cup Series race in 1984. He also competed in the AAA/USAC Champ Car Series from 1981 through 1995.

In the Champ Car Series, he appeared in one race each season from 1981 through 1992 then again in 1994 and 1995. He had one win during the 1986 season in his lone appearance.

He also competed in two Formula One races in 1978. He competed in 18 IROC races from 1985 through 1990. He also won two IROC races in 1985 and 1987.
